Bianca Del Rio Comedy Specials Greenlighted for LOGO
Scott Holland READ TIME: 4 MIN.
Last week, Logo announced that "RuPaul's Drag Race" season 6 winner and fan favorite Bianca Del Rio will star in "Not Today Bianca," two original half-hour comedy specials that follow the drag queen superstar as she takes on Hollywood.
Debuting this December, the specials will co-star Emmy Award-winner RuPaul, comedy actress and Emmy Award-winner Kristen Johnston; actress and New York Times bestselling author Tori Spelling; Tony Award-winning actress and Broadway star Marissa Jaret Winkour; "RuPaul's Drag Race" Judge, Michelle Visage, TV host and personality Ross Mathews as well as Hollywood's favorite BFF Rightor Doyle. Additional guest stars include Charo, Alec Mapa, Fortune Feimster and Coco Peru.
After winning "RuPaul's Drag Race" season 6, Bianca Del Rio's career has been on fire. She has toured the world playing for sold out crowds and most recently starred in her own movie, "Hurricane Bianca." In these two comedic specials, Del Rio takes her career to the next level and has moved to Hollywood to take on the world. In the first special, Bianca tries to flex her celebrity to go after a booking on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," while in the second special Bianca learns the true meaning of the holidays.
"When Logo offered me my own comedy special, I said, 'Let's make it a double,'" cracked Bianca Del Rio. "Partnering with World of Wonder, the twisted minds behind RuPaul's Drag Race, we mixed our favorite '90s movies, a splash of Broad City and topped if off with a pint of cheap vodka. The results are two off-the-wall episodes of Not Today Bianca that are based on my own sad and hilarious life since moving to Los Angeles."
"Bianca's sharp wit and hilarious sense of humor create the perfect comedy storm," said Pamela Post, SVP of Original Programming for Logo. "Logo viewers are some of Bianca's biggest fans and we are excited to have her back to deliver more laughs to the masses."
The last time I sat down with Bianca Del Rio, was the day after she was crowned, so it's been 2 years and it's a perfect time to catch up a couple months prior to her specials airing.
What did you do with the $100,000?
Paid taxes.... 52,000 went to taxes so I only had 42,000 left, but that was 42 more than I had prior to going on "Drag Race." I wish I could tell you I bought something extravagant, but all I have been doing is working.
How did being on "RuPaul" change your life?
I mean it's been surreal. It has been 2 years of a wild ride that has opened a million doors. I was planning on giving up drag at 40, but since "Drag Race" it's been unbelievable... no complaints here!
Did you watch Season 7, 8 and "All Stars" 2, and what were your thoughts?
No, no and no. I did not watch a lot because I was traveling, but I did try to catch up when I had some free time. It's actually hard to watch once you have been on it. It's kind of like high school. You do it and you move on.
I was a huge Joan Rivers fan, so I have to ask you how it was to work with her?
Oh come on, it was the best thing in the world. She was always one of my favorites growing up. I had met her a couple times and she was super kind, but it was amazing doing "In Bed with Joan." She was beyond gracious even though she had taken a red eye to fly in and I was the 3rd of 5 "In Bed with Joan" she was taping that day. I was supposed to do 17 minutes with her, but we had so much fun we did an hour.
Who are some of the other memorable celebrities you have worked with?
Wanda Sykes is amazing and has a house in Fire Island. It's amazing how many celebrities are super fans of the show, like Neil Patrick Harris. There are just too many to name. I am blessed!
Is there anybody you wouldn't work with again?
No, I don't rule anything out, and nobody been an asshole to me.
What has been your favorite city(ies) to perform in and why?
The best has to be Amsterdam as people are very happy and go lucky. Maybe it's the weed. The entire country of Australia is wonderful as well.
"Hurricane Bianca" was released last month. Tell me about the process of creating that?
My genius friend Matt Kugelman created it, but I never thought it would get produced. We were able to shoot it last year and his hard work and dedication is what made it happen. We were so lucky to get huge cameos (RuPaul, Margaret Cho, Rachel Dratch, Alan Cummings, etc) and now they are talking about a sequel.
Word association time, I will say a celebrity and you say the first word(s) that comes to mind
Ru Paul - fabulous
Caitlyn Jenner - douche
Kim Davis - still alive?
Ryan Lochte - douche part 2
Hillary Clinton - wonderful, and hopefully our next president
(interview was done the end of October so let's hope Bianca's Prediction came true)
Donald Trump - I hope one day I am in drag and he can grab my pu$$y...he will get the surprise of a lifetime!
Is there anything I didn't ask you that you would like to talk about?
I can't express enough how grateful I am to RuPaul and "World of Wonder" who gave me this platform which completely changed my life.
