'Riverdance' Flows with Excitement as It Welcomes a 'New Generation'
Will Demers READ TIME: 3 MIN.
A show that is part concert, part traditional Irish folk dance, and part graphic spectacle returns to the stage for a celebration of 30 years of the show's many incarnations. "Riverdance 30 - The New Generation" is the culmination of composer Bill Whelan's work, which originated as a seven-minute interval at the Eurovision Song Contest 1994, which was viewed by over 300 million viewers worldwide and received a standing ovation. "Riverdance - The Show" premiered in Dublin, Ireland at the Point Theatre in 1995.
30 years later, the "new generation" refers to performers that weren't born before the original show's premiere, and it's incredibly refreshing to see this anniversary performance, flooded with talent, come to the Rhode Island stage. Director John McColgan makes certain that this new group of performers have what it takes to honor all of the dancers, musicians, and vocalists that have made "Riverdance" a global phenomenon, and it's easy to see why this show has such staying power. Its energetic choreography, visual style, and vocals not only serve to amaze the audience, but move them, as well.
This show not only brings us the lush green landscapes of Ireland, but also America's bigger city vibes, with an urban dance routine where two street performers meet the traditional Irish dancers in a flashy dance-off. This section is admittedly the most fun, with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure. The rest of the show is a transcendental and ethereal journey, laced with incredible visuals thanks to digital graphic technology, which seems to bring our troupe around the globe. With dreamy vocals and traditional music provided by a four-piece band, including Mark Alfred (drums and percussion), Cathal Croke (Uilleann Pipes and low whistle), Emma McPhilemy (sax), and the incredibly talented fiddle player Haley Richardson.
But it is the dancers that take center stage. The original choreography by Michael Flatley will astound and amaze you each time a dancer appears. If you aren't entertained by the dancing, you'll be moved by the emotional musical score or the seamless visuals. This is a family-friendly experience; even young children will be held rapt (hopefully) by the kinetic energy present in every moment of "Riverdance."
"Riverdance 30 - The New Generation" performed for one weekend April 4-6 at The Providence Performing Arts Center 220 Weybosset Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02903. For information or tickets call 401-421-2787 or visit www.ppacri.org.
