Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in Sao Paulo interpreting bossa nova songs under the influence of João Gilberto. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Veloso–together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, his sister Maria Bethânia, and a number of other poets and intellectuals–led the tropicália movement of the late 1960s and permanently altered the course of Brazil's popular music.

Although tropicalismo set the tone for Veloso's career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporating elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canao, baiao, and rap, his music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once an astute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Veloso is one of the most respected poets in the Portuguese language. He has released more than 50 albums and has collaborated on soundtracks for films such as "Hable con Ella" by Pedro Almodovar and "Frida" by Julie Taymor (whose track "Burn It Blue," in collaboration with Lila Downs, competed for "Best Original Song" at the Oscars in 2003). His memoir, "Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil, was published fall 2002.
