Halsey Calls Out Magazine, Swears off Press Over Pronouns, Out-of-Context Quotes

Pop singer Halsey, who officially changed their personal pronouns to they/she on Instagram in March, lambasted a magazine they claimed disrespected their pronouns and used their quotes out of context, BuzzFeed News reported.

The celeb had initially expressed excitement and gratitude over the August issue of Allure, on which they appear as the cover star.

But the interview, and its promotion, left Halsey less than happy. The celeb made their displeasure known in a series of tweets on July 21 in which Halsey chided Allure magazine, tweeting: "First your writer made a focal point in my cover story my pronouns and you guys deliberately disrespected them by not using them in the article."

"Despite the fact that Allure's cover story explicitly mentioned Halsey's use of she/they pronouns – and quoted them as saying pronoun preferences are 'meant for you to help better understand yourself' – the magazine exclusively used she/her pronouns throughout the profile," BuzzFeed News noted in its article of the situation.

But that wasn't the only thing Halsey was angry about.

"Your admin bastardized a quote where I discuss the privilege of being the white child of a Black parent and intentionally used a portion that was the antithesis of the point I was trying to make," she continued, referring to a July 20 tweet from Allure promoting the August issue.

A more complete quote, as BuzzFeed News pointed out, saw Halsey reflecting that as the child of an interracial couple, the musician suffered because "I'm not connecting with my family or my culture in a way that I would like to, or because the waitress thinks I'm the babysitter when I go out with my family," going on to say: "None of that would compare to the tears that I would shed for presenting phenotypically Black and the disadvantages and the violence that I would face because of that."

"I think this is really common for mixed families," Halsey added. "You want your kids to have an advantage in life. That unfortunately puts them in a position of denying their heritage."

BuzzFeed News posted a screencap of the tweet that used the quote. (The tweet was no longer on Allure's Twitter feed by July 21.)

Topping it all off, Halsey had told Allure in the interview that they are routinely "exploited" and "misquoted" and predicted that more of the same would result from that very interview.

"I just don't translate very well in print," Halsey said. "Even saying this is going to get me in trouble. I already know that it is."

"Do fucking better....?" she concluded in a tweet before swearing off talking to the press altogether.

Allure has since responded with an apologetic tweet that prominently featured the magazine's August cover.
