Watch: Doritos Ad Tells True Story of Father, Gay Son, and Acceptance

Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.

A three-hankie ad from Doritos tells the true story of a single dad who gets advice online about how to talk to his gay son after realizing that the college friend the son has invited home is more than just a buddy.

The Spanish-language ad, titled "El mejor regalo (The Best Gift)" is set in Mexico and runs for two minutes and sixteen seconds. The story begins with the son phoning home to tell his father he's on his way home from college for Christmas break, and saying he's invited a friend, Manuel, to come along for the holiday visit.

While running errands with the young men, the father notices how physically comfortable they are with each other. At one point, the son and his buddy ride a horse together, locked in an embrace - a sight that causes an onlooker to raise an eyebrow.

Later, at a restaurant, the son orders for his buddy, which prompts a look from the father and a worried glance back at him from Manuel.

Seeing how things are, and wanting to be able to talk to his son about it - but sensing his son's hesitation - the father goes online to Reddit to ask for advice. Responses come flooding back in, and the father, relieved and smiling, knows what to do. Thanking his Reddit correspondents for their advice, the father then finds his son in the kitchen and says, "I have to tell you something... I love you."

The son happily fills in the rest: "You love me just as I am."

Those three hankies (maybe more) will come in handy as the two share an emotional hug.

The ad is part of the Doritos Rainbow campaign, which has been ongoing since 2016, notes 3Shots.

"Since its first edition in 2016, Doritos Rainbow has been a platform to back the LGBT+ community and their families," the site notes, going on to say that Doritos draws on stories shared by members of the public. Those stories are part of its #PrideAllYear initiative.

The site quoted Doritos Mxico Marketing Director Eduardo Crdoba as saying, "We're really proud of the accomplishments that have been achieved with Doritos Rainbow, and we believe the moment is right to show that our commitment extends beyond a proud celebration every June."

Other popular brands have also contributed ads and even short films celebrating LGBTQ acceptance. Oreo partnered with PFLAG last fall to produce a short film about a daughter visiting home with her girlfriend while her father struggles to find a way to express his love and support. (Oreo also produced a limited-edition "Rainbow" variety of its signature cookie.) This holiday season, Ritz crackers created a holiday ad that paid tribute to the bonds of family, whether by blood or by choice.
