Kevin Spacey Reveals Homelessness and Financial Ruin After Sexual Assault Scandal
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Kevin Spacey, two-time Oscar-winning actor once at the pinnacle of Hollywood success, has revealed that he is now homeless, living in hotels and short-term rentals due to the financial consequences of sexual assault allegations that surfaced in 2017. Speaking to "The Telegraph", Spacey explained, “I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain. The costs over these last seven years have been astronomical. I’ve had very little coming in and everything going out.” He clarified that his former residence in Baltimore was lost to foreclosure as his financial situation worsened, and he has since had to keep his belongings in storage while trying to find work wherever possible. Spacey admitted considering bankruptcy but has so far managed to avoid it, though his debt is described as “many millions”.
Spacey’s fall from grace began in 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making sexual advances in the 1980s, when Rapp was a teenager. This revelation sparked a wave of additional accusations from more than 30 men. Spacey has consistently denied all allegations, asserting his innocence in press interviews and public statements. Over the subsequent years, he faced multiple lawsuits and criminal trials in both the United States and the United Kingdom. These legal battles ended with dropped charges, dismissals, or acquittals, including a high-profile UK trial in 2023 where Spacey was cleared of all nine sexual offense charges.
Despite his legal acquittal, Spacey has been largely excluded from mainstream Hollywood productions. He described his situation as similar to the blacklisting of creative professionals during the McCarthy era, suggesting that industry leaders are waiting for a prominent figure to “give permission” for his return to major projects. Spacey remains hopeful, stating, “We are in touch with some extremely powerful people who want to put me back to work. And that will happen in its right time”.
Since his acquittal, Spacey has found work primarily in European independent films and live performances, including a cabaret-style show in Cyprus. He credited Italian director Franco Nero for casting him in his first post-scandal role, which contributed to his gradual re-entry into the industry. Spacey was recently honored at the Italian Global Series Festival, receiving the Maximo Award for Excellence, signaling some international support for his comeback efforts.
