'Us' Slams It at SXSW

READ TIME: 2 MIN.

The most anticipated film of the year thus far lived up to expectations when it was screened at SXSW this weekend. The buzz has been considerable since the trailer went viral on Christmas.

"Now, the biggest question to arise after its first public screening is: Does "Us" live up to the hype?"
That the screening was hosted by the film's writer/director Jordan Peele contributed to the media scrutiny for the screening of the film that opens wide on March 22.

"'Get Out' mixed humor and chills, and in 'Us,' Peele's comedy roots are even more apparent. At Friday's screening, the crowd was laughing heartily one moment, screaming the next and cheering soon after," reports the Times.

The early reviews are positive: that the film "offers twists and ironies and false endings galore – along with more laughs than the comedian-turned-auteur dared to include in his debut film. Though probably more commercially limited by its genre than its hard-to-pigeonhole predecessor, it packs a punch."

"The less you know going in – and the less energy you spend thinking about it after the fact – the better the movie works, trading on some uncanny combination of Peele's imagination and our own to suggest a horror infinitely larger and more insidious than the film is capable of representing."

, "Us" has a 100% rating.

In a Q&A, Peele commented that he "wants to leave audiences wondering as well, writes the New York Times. "During a Q. and A. after the screening, he said, 'My favorite thing is the idea that people will leave ready to have a conversation with whoever they're with.' He continued, 'I also wanted to design a film that's very personal for every individual.'"
