Another Gay Bar Gone? Boston Eagle is Up for Sale

And then there were...? Gay blogger BosGuy reports the "space formerly occupied by the Boston Eagle is now for rent."

He writes: "I started getting texts about four weeks ago...the Boston Eagle (a.k.a. "The Dirty Bird") had closed and was for rent. After doing a little digging I was able to confirm it is for rent. The lease for the 1,400 sq. foot bar also comes with the use of a license for food, entertainment and liquor until 2:00 AM."

Considering the bar is located adjacent to the Boston Center of the Arts — a thriving nighttime destination in the South End, it will likely be sold quickly.

The Boston Eagle has been open for some 40 years, and was more of a neighborhood bar, making it confusing for out-of-town visitors who confused it with the "Eagle brand" throughout the country, which is known as a leather bar, BosGuy writes,

When some in the comments section disputed BosGuy's report, a reader posted a link to the property's listing with a local realtor that reads: "This bar has been operated by same owner, lease includes the use of license for food, entertainment, and liquor license until 2 AM. Bar needs some renovations, walking cooler is in basement for the liquor and there is a mahogany full bar in the bar currently with gum wood woodwork throughout. This bar has been a landmark in the South End for about 41 years. (The Eagle) Lease is a triple net and bar currently paying $3,800 a quarter for property taxes 2020."

Reactions to the closing on the message-posting site, UniversalHub.com, focuses on the bar's owner, Jack, who was known for his acerbic — to some downright rude — manners to customers.

"I know people in the neighborhood...will be hoping this means the nasty neighbor owner will be gone too," wrote one named Lee.
Another, named Whit, put it quite simple: "Fuck You Jack!" Additionally, Friartuck wrote: "Not since the infamous drag queen Sylvia Sydney...has anyone in the Boston gay community been so loathsome as Jack."

A bar patron offered a YouTube video about a visit to his bar and his encounter with Jack:

They also posted a clip from the film "Ted 2" when both the bar's exterior and interior were used. There is a gag spreading rumors about Jay Leno having "gay bathroom sex" that features the ex-talk show host emerging from the urinal after unsuccessfully hitting on a patron.

As for the closing, another reader replied on BosGuy's comments: "Remember, Jack owns the building. He isn't going to close until he wants to, or they take him out the front door boots first."
